Goodbye DeRosa
Wow!! this news really surprised me, DeRosa, who wasn’t traded for Jake Peavy because we needn’t another pitcher is now traded for three MINOR LEAGUE pitchers.
It really surprised me and I really hope this move is a precursor of a Peavy trade because if not I really don’t understand this move. DeRosa was one of the few that actually responded in playoffs (D-Lee and Soto I think are the other 2) and now we lose him for three pitchers that aren’t even proved in the Major Leagues, that’s very sad and silly. We will miss him. But I think we need to wait for Hendry to see what other move he makes because I don’t think he is really planning to keep this 3 pitchers. Also I wanted to say to all the people that is posting negative comments to Hendry that if he is doing this is for one reason and all he is trying is to improve the team, you can’t insult him just like that because you are in love DeRosa or something like that, he is just doing what he thinks is the best for the team.
Now, what could really bother us or at least bothers me is that at this point we really don’t have a better team than last year, we haven’t had any upgrade in any position, actually al have been downgrades so I’ll make this comparison to prove it.
Wood – Gregg = downgrade, Wood is far better.
Edmonds – Gathright = I don’t know if this comparison is fair but I don’t think this is an upgrade so I make the comparison.
DeRosa – Miles = This is a downgrade totally but I think Miles is an interesting player so it isn’t that big the difference for me. The problem here is that the fans really liked DeRosa so it will be hard to accept the move.
This three moves are downgrades but I think this moves are Peavy-precursors because Gathright signing is maybe because Pie is going to the Padres as well the 3 pitchers that were traded for DeRosa. But we will need to wait.
The other moves some say could be accomplished in few weeks are Marquis for Vizcaino assuming Vizcaino’s 4M and paying 1M of Marquis salary which would release 4.9M of salary, this move is great in my opinion. And the other move is the Cubs signing Bradley, well I would’ve prefered someone like Ibanez but Bradley is also very good and I think we need to give the guy a chance and not say that because of the troubles he’s had in the past the same will be here, signing him is also great in my opinion.
So, being very positives we could have Peavy, Vizcaino and Bradley in few weeks and that would be awesome.
Winter Meetings ended. Cubs Movements: None
Well…kind of disappointing that in a week that is supposed to be the one with more movement in the entire offseason the Cubs didn’t do anything. As I said in on of my earlier posts it was actually a possibility that the Cubs wouldn’t do anything. I waited until something was finalized before posting something about DeRosa or Vitters that were the 2 players that most people were against of trading for Peavy.
In the beggining I was totally in favor of trading for Peavy, but after seeing what the final package would look like I’m glad this didn’t get done. And I’m not talking about DeRosa because if you want to receive a good player you need to give a good player but the fact that the Padres wanted him plus Marquis (no problem with that), Pie (still no problem) and Vitters (thats were my problem is) just made me wish a deal like that wasn’t finalized. The Padres asked too much, and we don’t have the necessity of a great pitcher like Peavy, the trade was more of a luxury situation. Also you can’t give up your best prospect (Vitters) for something you really don’t need. And in the end it was dissapointing not only because the movements the Cubs made were: 0. But because this team isn’t better than last year.
But, what’s next?, I think that if we ain’t going to get Peavy the rotation is good as it is. 1.Zambrano 2.Dempster 3.Harden 4.Lilly 5.Marquis. It looks very good for me.There are some rumors linking Randy Johnson to the Cubs, if we get rid of Marquis’ contract and replace him with Johnson that’s totally fine for me.
And talking about the lineup I would love that we could give a chance to Hoffpauir but I think thats not going to happen at least as a regular.
So if you ask me (in left-handed bat terms) I would really like to get Ibanez instead of Bradley. This because Bradley is conflictive and I don’t want him fighting with Lee, Zambrano or Piniella, also Ibanez knows Piniella and I’m sure he would be giving everything for the Cubs and also he has been consistent in the past years. So I think that would be the only move the Cubs would need to do, and maybe Johnson would be good too.
That’s all.
Greg Maddux

When everybody is talking about trades and free agents, I think is
necessary to look and admire the man that today retired: Greg Maddux.
An
amazing pitcher, some could say the best ever, he never had any scandal
let alone something that could put in doubt his career. We look at the
recent retired big ones: Clemens is struggling in court because of
steroids and some put in doubt his entire career, Bonds, well I think I
don’t even have to say something about Bonds. And Greg Maddux, the
great Maddux, completely clean.
I think I don’t need to write
all his amazing stats, just saying he is retiring with 355 wins and the
fact that he is one of the few that can say that had a completely clean
career is enough to be totally sure that he is going to be elected for
the Hall of Fame in his first year.
I don’t need to say anymore, just give honor to whom honor deserves.
Greg Maddux
Winter Meetings
Here it comes what everybody has been waiting for in the last few
weeks, what will decide the future of most free-agent and trade-rumored
players. Its gonna be a circus I’m totally sure.
But talking about what the Cubs might do in these Winter Meetings, Wow! its a total mystery.
Some weeks ago Lou Piniella said that the talks about Peavy were done, that we were perfect with our actual rotation. Like 3 days later, there is an article which says that Peavy could be headed to the Cubs because Sand Diego found a third team: the Orioles. So, I really don’t know what to think, many persons that comment in the articles say that we have a good rotation and that we don’t need Peavy, other say we need him, other say it would be great, other say that what we really need is a power left-handed bat like Adam Dunn or Bobby Abreu, other say that we need to get rid of Soriano (it was also commented in an article by Carrie Muskat that the Cubs are willing to unload his contract, in the same article it says is probable the Cubs will try to unload Marquis’ too).
Now, what I think is: The Cubs have a good rotation but acquiring Peavy would make it not just great but the best in many years in the Majors. I don’t think he earns that much money, his contract is very good if we think about the things he can do and comparing it to other players’ contracts, but for acquiring him the Cubs would need to unload a big contract, and Marquis’ contract seems the most reasonable because he is overpaid, also if the Cubs could unload Soriano’s contract the possibilities of changes to the team are huge, because there would be a vacancy for a left-fielder and also a leadoff-hitter but that is speculating too much. In resume about Peavy, if the Cubs could make the right move and get him it would be awesome I don’t consider it a waste of money, he can do and give amazing things to this organization.
Now, about the left-handed hitter
: We need a middle-of-the-order left-handed hitter, that is a fact. But I think it is already in-house, we need Fukudome to be a real threat like he was in Japan and also we need to give Hoffpauir a chance, he hasn’t done another thing than hitting the times he has been called up, and his numbers do the talk for him he hit .342 last season and he is going to improve. I think moving Fukudome to center and inserting Hoffpauir in right field is the smartest thing the Cubs could do, he needs a chance and we need a left-handed hitter, for me its a win-win situation. In the case he doesn’t fill the expectatives we can do a middle-season trade for a left-handed hitter, but Hoffpauir needs initially a chance. So for now, I’m ok if the talks about left-handed hitters are done.
Also I think is necessary to talk about the Kerry Wood situation, I think its a pitty that we payed him a long time while he couldn’t pitch and now that he can pitch we let him go, also the fact the Cubs haven’t even done an offer to the guy that led us to our first playoffs series win in many many years its really bad. Only if he doesn’t return, I think we need to say him “Thanks for the memories” because when he could, he gave everything of him for the Cubs.
That’s all.
Here we go again….
I started these blog since last season but I erased it to start again. I stopped blogging some time before playoffs and well, everybody knows what happened, we got swept and humiliated….again. But I think my heart is well-recovered now (like all years) and ready for more baseball, even if its just in trade and free agents talks.
So here we go again to think about baseball and to HOPE the Cubs can pull of a succesful team for next year not only in regular season but in playoffs.
